GIS Data @ Warnell and elsewhere
- GIFF: Local repository for students who are logged into one of the school's computers.
- Georgia GIS Clearinghouse ( http://data.georgiaspatial.org/ ): Repository for every county in Georgia (aerials, DEM, topos, etc)
- NRCS ( http://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov/ ): County-level repository for each state in the nation
Getting reaquanted with ArcMap
- ArcMap 10
- Editing a shapefile:
- right-click on layer > Edit Features > Organize Feature Templage (New Template) > Finish/OK
- right-click on layer > Edit Features > Start Editing
- Click on layer in the Create Features window to the right then select the tool (polygon, polyline, point, etc)
- Start digitizing...
- Load Bing or Google Earth imagery
- File > Add Data > Add Basemap
- Save Bing or Google Earth image to your computer
- load the image and zoom into the area you are interested in
- File > Export Map (file type JPEG, resolution~200dpi will work fine)
- Clip an image (one from GIFF or elsewhere that is saved on your hard drive)
- zoom into your area of interest
- right-click on the layer > Data > Export Data
- change the extent to the Current Display, set the output directory and file name, ..
- OR you can use the Extract by Mask tool in ArcToolbox
- create shapefile
- measure area
- map layout
