Senior Project GIS Notes
Notes for Senior Project:
Overview:
- GIS data are available for each county on the P:\ drive (see GIFF for available data)
- You should probably include a map of your property showing your property boundaries overlain on the NAIP2007 imagery (1-meter color) and the DRGs (USGS 24k topo map)
- Can quickly drop a map into PowerPoint by:
- CTRL-ALT-PrintScreen to take a screen capture of your map/photo/etc
- Edit > Paste into Powerpoint
- Crop the image
- crop tool located on the picture toolbar
- right-click on the image > show picture toolbar
- Resize the image by holding <shift> and dragging one of the corners
- this maintains scale
- if you drag from the side, you'll skew the image (mess up the scale)
GPS:
- Check out one of the GeoExplorer3 GPS units from Dustin Evans (4-530)
- BEFORE YOU COLLECT DATA WITH YOUR GPS UNIT...
- Find your property on the NAIP 2007 imagery and determine the areas you can map on the computer and those that you will have to visit the field to capture
- GPS DATA COLLECTION
- I find it easiest to collect the data as a series of points and lines
- GPS a point where the boundary changes direction
- GPS a line between these points
- When you are finished, upload the GPS data to ArcGIS and connect the dots using the NAIP 2007 imagery as a guide.
- GPS instructions can be found here (will be ready by 9/12/08)
